Aaah... the early years of the British Invasion: rock'n'roll musicians forced into "nice" little suits and well-crafted pop songs almost covering up the raw sexual energy of the young men who wrote and performed them. All of those girls weren't screaming over upbeat music and catchy hooks; it was John Lennon's screams that ruined all of those seat covers. And the audible effects of the British Invasion are still with us. Many groups have a song or two that they characterize as mod or Britbeat, and some even specialize in this genre (tribute and parody bands aside). Of the modern Britbeat bands, unfortunately, some just rip off old tunes and add new lyrics. Some add a new twist with minor chords and unusual progressions. Others miss the boat altogether and pair simple melodies with simple lyric lines, resulting in rather boring rewrites. But The Venue have avoided all of these paths and pitfalls. 'Mmhm!' is a wonderful melding of the old and the new. The sound is almost familiar, Beatles meets Kinks meets early Who meets Yardbirds, but without being straight imitation. The best elements of Britbeat and mod are there, but they've been chopped up, mixed around, and fused into something original and exciting. Because The Venue actually catch the energy that made the best of the British Invasion bands so powerful, that clean-cut pop sound that couldn't quite disguise something more dangerous. 'Deep-Fried Sinfulness' captures this most successfully and is downright sweaty and sexy. 'So Much Too Much' is a little over-mixed, but still has great hooks and sounds like it would be a full-on pop anthem live. 'A Deadly Buzz' and 'Same Way As His Bus Does' are both catchy tunes overlaid with complex lyric lines, original phrasing, and more fantastic hooks. While 'What's in His Head', 'Too Many Ways', and 'Sentimental Ode' are pure 60s pop: the perfect beat combined with clear and lovely vocal harmonies, making it seem like it's a beautiful day that will last forever. Close your eyes and you're a teenager again, locked in your room with the stereo on and the rest of the world blocked out. If The Venue have their way, another Invasion's about to start, but this time it's coming at you from Sweden.
