Phil Asher is one of our favourite producers in the nu-house area. And with his two previous singles on Versatile in the back of our mind, this album for the same label seemed like a rather good idea. But it has turned out to be a bit of a tricky stinker. We would not have guessed that particular outcome, because it all starts out in fine form with two infectious Afro-Brazil stompers in good old Restless Soul style, 'Wha Blo' and 'Bamba'. 'Having Your Fun', the latest single, is a truly infectious and joyous R'n'B influenced pop song. After that the fun is over. 'Marvin Is One' is a very deep disco-funk groove but keeps it at just that. 'Bassual' (supposedly a contraction of Bass and Sensual -yeah right) is again rather poppy, albeit with a rather strange rhythm section for a pop song. 'HAL' initially sounds like Detroit à la Mayday but ends up like Carl Craig gone wrong: too long and low on invention. Luckily for the vinyl buyer 'Journey To Jupiter' is announced as a cd-only track. We suggest you avoid its dated 70s space-opera moves. 'Never Giving Up' and the title song are better, but you cannot help thinking of what people like Jazzanova and 4hero (or Asher himself, when he's in shape) could have done with the same raw sound materials. The only safe havens are 'Find Myself' and 'Spaceship Rocket'. But those two were already on the first single. We wish Focus all the success they deserve with the gorgeous little gem that is 'Having Your Fun'. But we think we will skip the album.
