Legowelt is one of the rising stars from the Bunker Records label. Both Legowelt and Bunker Records are situated in The Hague, Holland. This label promotes itself with the slogan 'The west coast electro sound of Holland' which indicates the retro-electro scene there. Besides solo efforts Legowelt also puts split and collaboration records out. Derrick in Nord Korea is actually an older release but has just been reprinted (Bunker Records reprints some of its releases when they are sold out). Everything is released on vinyl only! Derrick in Nord Korea is a 6 track EP with more than just it's title as reference to the 80's. Besides the Derrick (a German Krimi serie from the 80's) joke in the title and the reference to the retro analogue sound of the Nord synths by Clavia, there is the music itself.
Legowelt blends the classic Kraftwerk electro sound with modern dance elements. The modern elements don't sound that modern actually. It is not like a techno version of Kraftwerk but rather a revision of that old electro sound with a lot of respect for the real thing. Legowelt creates the sort of rhythms and melodies Kraftwerk could have produced but gives them a bit more body so to speak. Legowelt also blends in elements from other dance genres from time to time in his songs. You could describe his music as old dance music with a modern touch, or as new dance music which pays tribute to the past. Especially the A-side of Derrick in Nord Korea is very good. The title song is in essence a straight forward electro track but the chorus (with vocoded vocals) display a playfulness that sets the song apart from most dance productions. 'He who rides the tiger' moves the electro sound into a disco context. It actually sounds a bit like Daft Punk at certain moments. Another great track is 'The ambassador' which is a little spooky due to the sounds and melody. This song reflects some new beat and acid beat influences. The B-side of Derrick is just as catchy as the A-side only the songs just don't have that little chorus or melody you instantly remember. Despite that this EP is an excellent dance record that also is worth listening to at home.
The Catnip 12" is a more recent release. All 3 tracks on this record are a sort of disco-electro with a sound sometimes reminiscent of Daft Punk (much more than 'He who rides the tiger') but without losing the electro feeling. This 12" is another fine effort. Legowelt produces great (dance) music that could reach a broad audience. His music is dance floor friendly but is as enjoyable to listen to at home. Both his solo records as collaborations are interesting, so any record is a good starting point to get into this artist.
