Sometimes a peek over the fence of the often strictly applied categorization of music into genres offers an unexpected surprise. Le Peuple de L’Herbe is such a baffling eye opener. This four piece from Lyon, France covers an extremely wide range of styles, mashes them together, and excels in all of them. From loungy, laid-back tunes, with characteristic muted brass solo, to explosive rapes with a turntable wizard. From sunny dub to DJ Shadow-ish cutup techniques. Danceable, addictive, Le Peuple de l’Herbe never gets boring or blunt. On the edge and powerful, compelling and full of groove, P.H. Test/Two is a remarkable piece of work. Where beat-oriented music nowadays seems to burn out with minimally inspired consumer pop, Le Peuple de l’Herbe is ready to show a pathway to the future. At times the sound does tend to reference grand master Tricky, but Le Peuple de l’Herbe never falls into the pitfall of copying. Pairing originality and enormous feeling for funky rhythms, P.H. Test/Two combines the studio wizardry of the beat avant-garde with the fun and dance element those knob-turning whiz kids lack. On tour this summer, this album might indeed propel Le Peuple de l’Herbe onto the international scene. Check them out at Lowlands, or wherever, or get the P.H. Test/Two record and enjoy the warm nights of the summer with an exceptional French band’s utterly new music.
