The main problem with the solid blues-rock of Greyhound Soul is the misplaced singer Joe Peña, whose irritating and raspy voice is way over-the-top. This unnecessarily results in overly ambitious and often annoying self-contented outings, though it also gives a different twist to the blues. Greyhound Soul, which is a perfect name for a blues band, nevertheless provide a strong formula of energetic and raw blues-rock, with several references to exotic country and laidback Fifties r&b. All of this sweaty swamp-blues might work a whole lot better on stage and in front of a small audience, but unfortunately - or maybe not - I didn't get the chance to see them live, and their second retro record didn't completely convince me to take the first Greyhound bus home to Alma de Galgo, wherever that may be.
