Sometimes you hear a record that is so beautiful that it's almost impossible to tell someone why it's so good, why you can't stop listening to it. Well, here's the first solo album by Ben Folds, and it really falls into that category. And it's not only because of the music, but it's also a kind of relief. Alright, I'll explain: Ben Folds was the singer/piano magician of Ben Folds Five, who released three albums and a rare/live compilation. In my view all masterpieces - the intimate songs like 'Alice Childress', 'Brick', and 'Magic', the loud uptempo tunes like 'Song for the Dumped', 'Army', and 'Mess', and everything in between. But everything must end, and because of territorial problems the band decided to split up. The only good news was that Ben Folds was about to go on with a solo career. But would this be as good as the things he did with the whole band? Well, no need to be nervous anymore: Here is 'Rockin' the Suburbs'. Fine pop songs with high-quality piano play and the warm sound of Ben Folds. It hits the nail on the head. The remarkable fascination to call people by their name in songs and song titles is obviously present, for example 'Annie Waits', 'Zak and Sara', and 'Fred Jones Part II' (Fred Jones is also mentioned in 'Cigarette' on the 'Whatever and Ever Amen' album.). Songs are often very personally addressed, and the chosen words are very fitting. When he sings "this is why I'd rather be alone" on 'Annie Waits' you hear high sentimental piano tunes, and when he shouts "motherfucker" at the end of 'Fired' the drums go wild. Handclaps right on time, a violin in the sad song, the voice that catches over right on time. It may sound a little cliché, but these things contribute in the composition of these perfect pop songs. Highlight after highlight, but there are two songs that really hit the ceiling: the energetic 'Gone', with the famous "whoohoo" choirs and the concluding 'The Luckiest', about the happiness he feels for the one he loves. He calls himself the luckiest, but I guess we are the ones who can be regarded lucky ones with something so beautiful as 'Rockin' the Suburbs'.
