On the fifth of april, another edition of Afterburner took place at the Effenaar in Eindhoven, Holland. Four bands were playing this thursday evening, in an almost empty hall. Eindhoven Rockcity, huh? Not that night, that's for sure! But, I must admit, the line-up wasn't very impressive, especially when, by arrival at the Effenaar, Lowrider turned out to be cancelled. Anyway, a replacement for Lowrider was found with Blackshine. They kicked off this evening, with an up-tempo mix of stonerrock and early death- and thrash metal (the bass player was wearing an old Metallica t-shirt, so I guess the thrash metal influences in Blackshine's music aren't a coincidence). Think Entombed, mixed up with grunts and early Paradise Lost-like guitar leads and what you get is Blackshine. Not bad at all. Mammoth Volume is a different story. They sound quite grungy, more like early Soundgarden with some psychedelic influences. The vocals of the huge singer were very heavy metal. Pretty boring, not my glass of beer. Dozer, instead, surely is! High gear Fu Manchu styled up-tempo stonerrock. What a boost of energy compared with the former band! Great live-band. That leaves Terra Firma the difficult, and impossible, so will appear, task to beat them. Terra Firma sounds a little out-of-date to me. It reminds me of early heavy metal acts like for example Trouble and Iron Maiden. I guess people who are into that kind of music will like Terra Firma too. Hopefully Eindhoven Rockcity will be recovered of its burn-out with the next edition of Afterburner.
