You mentioned that you are currently working on a new album...what can we expect and when?
"The new record will be out on the 7th of september on Matador records. The
title of the album is 'Pick Up'. There will be 13 or 14 tracks on it. I
replaced my analog 8 track with a digital 16 track recorder. That made
composing a lot easier, since you can edit the tracks. The record as a
whole sounds a lot better.....I think."
What was all this secrecy about some time ago concerning your new project?
"That has something to do with sampling and clearances. I can't tell you
anymore yet, sorry. You'll have to wait till the release..."
Did you experience massive advantages being released on Matador? Are they a supportive label?
"There are a lot of advantages being a Matador recording artist. The record
gets to be released all over the world. Besides, I'm in good company;
Pavement, Jon Spencer, Cornelius, Arab Strab and Catpower."
Do your surroundings have any influence on the sound you produce?
"On the first record I was influenced by the stuff in my shop. I took the
nice sounds from the bad cd's at hand.
On Pick Up the influence of my surroundings is even bigger. I sampled a lot
of sounds from my surroundings (another clue??)"
You are going to Roskilde, does Solex really fit in at festivals?
"Not more or less than any other band. The times of "bass, drums, and
guitar-bands" are more or less gone. The way I, the Beastie Boys, or Fatboy
Slim make records are quite the same, and very different from the way
'normal' bands record. That has a concequence on how we play live, which
differs a lot from the regular band. Three MC's and a DJ can make a stadium
go nuts. So can Solex (... as long as an audience knows your songs...)"
What's your earliest memory?
"Playing the game 'memory' with my parents."
Can you name your three most favourite bands/performers?
"Chet Baker, Arab Strab, the Notwist I've played with both Arab Strab and the Notwist. Maybe one day..."
Who would you like to meet face to face? Why? And what would you ask him/her/them?
"Chet Baker.
I would ask him why he couldn't die some place else...
Every day I have to pass the window that he fell out of on my way to my shop."
What's your favourite curse word?
"Fok (which also means 'glasses' in Dutch)... that's not too bad, is it??)"
Already have any plans for this New Year's Eve?
"No plans yet, but we're probably in America. So we'll be stuck, with a flat
tire, bad coffee, and 24 hour K-rock, somewhere in Ohio looking for a bad
motel..."
